nah. I doubt they would do this. .2 inches is not that much bigger and would cause problems with designing apps to look good on it. I can see a 4 inch screen, and them getting rid of the home button. What they'll do for the home button is make the screen clickable at the bottom where the home button used to be. It would be similar to squeezing a magic trackpad. That would enable them to get rid of the home button and expand the screen to that area, making it a 4 inch screen. I can also see the area above the screen and next to the camera and ear piece become touch sensitive, enabling "drag down" menus that would enable multitasking or enable quick settings. For example, you could drag down from one corner to get multitasking menu and switch back to a different app, (8 instead of 4, I hope) and drag down from the other corner to quickly adjust screen brightness and turn your wifi hotspot on or off. They may also make the back touch sensitive, but I can't imagine a use for that, so I don't know what they'll do with it. But they made a glass back for a reason. I think they have a really good idea of what to do with a touch sensitive back.

No one asks what happens to Tmobile if the merger doesn't go through. Do they just continue along their merry way with the nice 3 million bonus from ATT? What will Deushe Telekom do with them if ATT merge doesn't go through? Go to the next bidder? Or just continue being the "4th" network provider?

I apologize for the big letters. I'm a mac newb and this will be my first mac. I have been waiting for this new macbook to buy and whats funny is that I walked into the Mac Store yesterday, the guy new everything about the product but seemed a little too clueless about the product cycle. He was like.. "uh, could be next February but no one ever knows". I asked how releases are typically handled for macs. He replies "I'm not really sure. It's anyone's guess". So I knew he was trying to avoid talking about it.

Of course there is. iOS runs on two currently available Apple smartphone models: 3GS and 4. The iOS that runs on these phones is sufficiently different in feature sets from the iOS that runs on Tablets, media consumption devices, and Apple TVs:
-Larger resolution on tablets
-Communications handled separately - No phone app or visual voicemail on Tablet or iPod Touch
-No installable apps on Apple TV
AppleTV isn't being counted. If it had apps, it would be. For now, while it's running iOS "under the hood", Apple and analysts aren't actually mentioning that or using it in counts.
And the differences between iPad / iPod / iPhone are orders of magnitude less than the differences between the ultra-high and ultra-low ends of what is being counted as Android "phones".
This whole "smartphone OS" is something dreamed up in the last few weeks by Android apologists, after the numbers showed that Apple has the most popular OS and the most popular piece(s) of hardware in the mobile industry.

In the end, the reason why the iPhone 5 won't come out until this fall comes down to the this: the Great East Japan Earthquake that seriously affected the high-tech companies in the Sendai area.
Because so many high-precision computer parts are made in the Sendai region, this has interrupted production of the iPad 2 (despite Apple's claims, in my humble opinion!) and also has made it harder for Apple to obtain the components for the upcoming iPhone 5.
As such, Apple is using the delay to do two, possibly three things:
1. Give more time for the iOS programming team to polish and get ready iOS 5.0, which may have a major interface revamp. (likely already done)
2. Gives time for the iPhone hardware engineers to incorporate the near-field communications (NFC) functionality for phone-based payment systems, including full compatibility with the Sony FeliCa system that is widely used in eastern Asia. (now likely to be done with the extra time afforded by a fall release of the iPhone 5).
3. Gives time for the iPhone hardware engineers to full incorporate the latest Broadcom or Qualcomm cellphone chipset so a single-design phone is fully GSM and CDMA compatible now and be ready for LTE by an update downloaded through iTunes. (likely already done)
Probably a combination of all of this, plus maybe incorporating some newer technologies.
For example: LG just came out with a 3D phone that does a great job for 3D gaming, according to a review in a German newspaper.
I don't know enough about Android, but it's supposed to run with 2.3 Honeycomb or so.
The Japanese incident will afford Apple some time from the impatient "What have you done for me lately?" crowd.
Not that they care, but there are IMO some competitors out there with some good ideas.
Between ios 5 and whatever else is around, I am looking forward to the next iphone.
No issues here with waiting, as an older guy I have no problems waiting until
things are ready:-)

If I were in the market for a smartphone and could choose a $49 iPhone 3GS vs. a $199+ iPhone 4 vs. a $199+ Android...I would very very seriously consider the 3GS since it is AT LEAST 4x cheaper...and in reality, does 99% of the iPhone 4 (I have the 3GS and as far as I can tell the 4 simply added Facetime and a front camera for facetime use).
That's pretty faulty math there. In reality, it's not 4x cheaper.
Pick AT&T:s cheapest plan, and you would pay $1369 for the 3GS and plan, for a 4 you would pay $1520 for the phone and plan. So you pay 90% of the cost of a 4 with plan and you'll only get an 3GS, a phone that's already passed by the 4, and will shortly be passed by 4S or 5.
I can't understand anyone who would consider buying a 3GS instead of a 4.
If you're unable to pay another $150 to get a 4, then you probably should wait until 5 or 4S arrives, or just start saving money.

I'm not digging this. I think it will be too hard to hold onto being that thin and the prospect of pad charging leads me to wonder how on earth you go about charging it in a car? Doesn't sound very convenient. Not to mention, how long of a battery life could this thing possibly have?

Yes, but there has been a massive fail rate in IBM Desktar Models (Hitatchi has bought the IBM hard drive division after). I know the problem won't appear again, and that the current Desktar only shares the name with the problematic one, but I prefer to stay away from Hitatchi drives. There are other brands, and they are priced similarly. I'm losing nothing here.

Latest Skype beta works quite well. I use a blue-tooth headset with my macbook and the results are really incredible.
Whats happening with iChat, are they getting it to work with MSN Messenger networks like with AOL?
I have just switched to Mac, and it's annoying I cant Video Conference with any MSN Messenger users (MSN Messenger on Mac doesnt support it). iChat is awesome but I have no contacts, lol. Anyone know of any other way, I have tried AdiumX and looked into Jabber.

If you look at the "big picture" it makes sense. The iPod is in decline, so Apple's previous big Fall music event isn't really big anymore. The iPhone could shore that up and bring lots of sales to 4Q and maybe even, reinvigorate iPod sales.
This. Jobs spent half of last September's event talking about 4.1 and 4.2 anyway; the iPhone is the next logical step.

One must assume the carrier would prefer to sell an iPhone, where they don't have to make up the cost of a "free" Android phone over time. Carriers thus would want to sink more advertising dollars and apply more sales pressure for the more profitable iPhone.
Again, let's get the iPhone on Sprint and T-Mobile and see how it all plays out.

They cannot bloat iphone because apple doesnt roll like that. If you notice, T-mobile(who usually sells all the "pure" android devices) never do bogo for them. They will, however do a BOGO for a low end android phone with their apps on it.
